Now We Are Six at One Hundred: Affect, Atmosphere, and Ordinary Feeling in A. A. Milne's Hundred Acre Wood

Edited Collection for the Children's Literature Association Series: Centennial Studies

Call for Abstracts

In 2027, A. A. Milne's Now We Are Six reaches its centenary. This is the second collection of children's verse and the third book in the Pooh sequence, following When We Were Very Young (1924) and Winnie-the-Pooh (1926). It contains 35 poems, all illustrated by Ernest H. Shepard. Unlike the prose Pooh books, it is a collection of self-contained poems. The poems move between several interconnected worlds:
  • the imaginative world of Christopher Robin
  • the domestic world of nursery life
  • the emerging world of Pooh and his friends
  • fantasy adventures inspired by children's play
  • reflections on growing older and being "six"

Rather than telling a continuous story, the collection creates a mosaic of childhood experiences. Although the poetry collection occupies a central place within the Pooh tetralogy, critical attention has overwhelmingly focused on Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner, leaving the verse comparatively underexamined. This collection seeks to redress that imbalance by placing Now We Are Six at the centre of contemporary children's literature scholarship.

Rather than revisiting familiar debates surrounding nostalgia, biography, or Disney adaptation, Now We Are Six at One Hundred asks a different question: what does the Hundred Acre Wood feel like?

The volume brings together scholars interested in affect, atmosphere, mood, embodiment, childhood, disability, and literary form to examine the diffuse textures of feeling that circulate through Milne's writing. Across the Pooh books, emotions are rarely dramatic or explicitly named. Instead, Milne constructs a world of repetition, ritual, waiting, wandering, comfort, uncertainty, and quiet companionship. This collection argues that these ordinary affects deserve sustained critical attention.

Affect theory provides the volume's principal methodological throughline, while welcoming dialogue with children's literature studies, disability studies, ecocriticism, cognitive literary studies, narratology, poetics, translation studies, adaptation studies, material culture, education, and book history. Critical Neurodivergent Studies is included as one productive interpretive framework among several, particularly where contributors wish to explore neurodivergent-coded affect without reducing characters to retrospective diagnosis.

We invite original chapter proposals that engage with Now We Are Six, the wider Pooh tetralogy, or the affective afterlives of Milne's work.

Possible topics include (but are not limited to):
  • affect theory and ordinary feeling
  • atmosphere, mood, and literary texture
  • poetic representations of childhood feelings - repetition, rhythm, and poetic form
  • negotiating independence, curiosity and imagination
  • childhood temporalities - counting, age, ritual, and developmental narratives
  • boredom, waiting, comfort, and everyday life
  • melancholy, flat affect, and emotional ambiguity
  • neurodivergent readings of the Hundred Acre Wood
  • landscape as emotional infrastructure
  • embodiment and sensory experience
  • space, enclosure, and domestic atmospheres - the domestic world of the nursery
  • the emotional texture of being six - wandering, wondering, waiting, playing, and belonging
  • friendship, care, dependency, and kinship
  • animality and more-than-human feeling
  • humour and affect
  • translation and the transmission of mood
  • adaptation and emotional transformation
  • Disney and the commercial afterlife of Pooh
  • illustration and visual affect
  • pedagogy and classroom encounters with Milne
  • nostalgia and the politics of remembering childhood
  • archives, manuscripts, and publishing history
  • ecocritical and environmental readings of the Wood
  • queer, feminist, or posthuman approaches to affect in Milne's work
  • illustrations as emotional achitecture, visual memory,
  • everyday rituals of walking, eating, collecting, playing
  • the imaginative world of Christopher Ronin
  • interwar Britain and emotional cultures
  • pastoral landscapes and environmental feeling after industrialization
  • Englishness and national identity
  • post-war emotional cultures
  • slow time, seasonal rhythms, and ordinary temporality
  • phenomenological approaches to childhood and everyday experience
  • sound, sensory and auditory worlds
  • material cultures – objects and things
  • food and domestic rituals

Interdisciplinary perspectives are especially welcome.

About the Collection

Now We Are Six at One Hundred is being developed for the Children's Literature Association Series' Centennial Studies imprint. The collection marks the centenary of Milne's 1927 poetry collection while offering the first sustained affect-theoretical examination of the Pooh corpus. By attending to the subtle moods, atmospheres, and ordinary feelings that animate the Hundred Acre Wood, the volume seeks to open new directions for Pooh scholarship and children's literature studies more broadly.

CFP Friendship in Children’s and Young Adult Literature, Film and Television (9/17/2026)

Friendship in Children’s and Young Adult Literature, Film and Television

deadline for submissions:
August 17, 2026

source: https://call-for-papers.sas.upenn.edu/cfp/2026/06/12/friendship-in-children%E2%80%99s-and-young-adult-literature-film-and-television

Friendship occupies a central place in children’s and young adult literature, film, and television. It functions as a key site through which processes of Bildung, selfhood, community, and belonging are imagined and negotiated. However, despite its centrality to narratives for young audiences, friendship has received comparatively limited sustained attention as a distinct object of study within children's literature and media scholarship.

This edited collection seeks to address this gap by bringing together interdisciplinary perspectives on friendship in children’s and young adult texts. The volume will explore how friendships are represented, experienced, challenged, and transformed across time, place, genres, and media forms. The volume welcomes contributions that engage with friendship through a range of theoretical, methodological, and analytical approaches, including (but not limited to) childhood studies, affect studies, queer theory, disability studies, gender studies, race and ethnicity studies, adaptation studies, media studies, posthumanism, and ecocriticism.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
  • friendship and identity formation
  • friendship and care
  • friendship across difference
  • friendship and community
  • friendship in fantasy and speculative fiction
  • animal, non-human, and posthuman friendships
  • digital friendships
  • friendship and activism
  • friendship and education
  • cross-cultural or transnational perspectives on friendship

Detailed proposals (approx. 400-500 words) and author biography must be submitted by 17 August 2026 to jade.dillon.craig@ntnu.no

Notification of acceptance will be emailed to authors by 17 September 2026

Full chapters of 6,000 – 8,000 words will be due by 17 February 2027

CFP Fusion or Fracture in the Hundred Acre Woods: Community in Adaptations of Winnie-the-Pooh (Virtual) (9/30/2026; NeMLA 3/6-9/2027)

Fusion or Fracture in the Hundred Acre Woods: Community in Adaptations of Winnie-the-Pooh (Virtual)

Co-organizers Michael A. Torregrossa and Carl B. Sell

Sponsored by Monsters & the Monstrous Area of the Northeast Popular Culture Association

Call for Papers - Please Submit Proposals by 30 September 2026

58th Annual Convention of Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA)

Salve Regina University (Newport, RI)/Online.

Hybrid event: 6-9 March 2027

This session’s modality is Virtual Only, meaning all presentations will be delivered via Zoom regardless of whether the presenters are in-person.

Rationale

Communities are at the heart of many literary texts, including the Winnie-the-Pooh series by writer A. A. Milne and artist Ernest H. Shepard.

For over one hundred years, readers have experienced the adventures of Pooh and his companions within the Hundred Acre Woods through Milne and Shepard’s books and their various adaptations.

In this session, we’d like to focus on the ways the stories of Pooh and his friends have been adapted. Scholarship on these works remains limited despite their increasing growth over time, especially since Milne and Shepard’s works have entered the public domain.

We believe these new texts offer valuable insight into how readers have received the original tales through their representation (for good or ill) of the relationship between characters, maintaining the fellowship or breaking it through extraordinary means.

News of Winnie-the-Pooh (and adaptations) will be shared by the organizers on our blog, Silly Old Bear? Adaptations, Appropriations, and Transformations of Winnie-The-Pooh: https://silly-old-bear.blogspot.com/. We also encourage you to make use of the resource guide provided at https://tinyurl.com/SillyOldBearRG in formulating your approach.

Submission Instructions

All proposals must be submitted into the CFPList system at https://cfplist.com/nemla/Home/S/22573 by 30 September 2026. You will be prompted to create an account with NeMLA (if you do not already have one) and, then, to complete sections on Title, Abstract, Brief Bio, Media Needs, and Modality. This session’s modality is Virtual Only, meaning all presentations will be delivered via Zoom regardless of whether the presenters are in-person.

Notification on the status of your submission will be made by 16 October 2026. If accepted, NeMLA asks you to confirm your participation with the session chairs by accepting their invitation and by registering for the event. The deadline for Registration/Membership is 9 December 2026. For the 2027 Convention, registration will be the same for in-person and remote attendance. (See NeMLA’s Membership and Registration page, at https://www.nemla.org/about/members.html, for full details.)

Be advised of the following policies for the Convention: All participants must be members of NeMLA for the year of the conference. Participants may present on up to two sessions of any type. A. A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh has always been a bit of a shapeshifter manifesting under various names and appearances since the start of his now over one-hundred-year career as a transmedia figure. Over the past century, Pooh and his associates from the Hundred Acre Wood have been adapted and appropriated to feature in accessories, artwork, cards, cartoons, clothing, collectibles, comics, cookbooks, fiction, films, games, home decor, illustrations, memes, musical theater, original videos, philosophical treatises, plays, poems, radio broadcasts, self-help manuals, stuffed animals, songs, streaming video, television programs, theatrical productions, theme park attractions, and translations as well as critical commentaries and works of scholarship. These stories tell of their adventures across time and space, and each text offers a unique approach to the characters. Notably, Pooh and his band have often undergone radical transformations through various parodies and pastiches, with many more innovative approaches appearing since their move into the public domain beginning in 2022.

In this collection, we seek to catalog and critique some of these various takes on Winnie-the-Pooh and his companions. We ask you to explore how these adaptations, appropriations, and transformations of these familiar figures connect to and/or diverge from the Poohian tradition established by Milne and illustrator E. H. Shepard. We want you to uncover what these works might say about the gang from the Hundred Acre Wood, the creators of these new works, and, ultimately, ourselves as the receivers of these texts. We encourage you to make use of the resource guide provided at https://tinyurl.com/SillyOldBearRG in formulating your approach. Updates on the project and news of Winnie-the-Pooh will be shared at https://silly-old-bear.blogspot.com/.

Book Details

For the 100th anniversary of the publication of "Winnie-the-Pooh," Gyles Brandreth chronicles the writing of this beloved classic and the life of its creator, A. A. Milne.

Somewhere, a Boy and a Bear tells the remarkable story of A A Milne, a playwright, a bestselling crime writer, poet, polemicist, humorist, and the man who created Winnie-the-Pooh.

Gyles Brandreth explores "Winnie-the-Pooh," a bear beloved by millions: his genesis, his life across a hundred years, his special philosophy, and the reasons for his worldwide popularity. Brandreth’s book is also the intimate biography of three generations of the fascinating and troubled Milne family, which knew fame and fortune, despising both for a time, but a family that ultimately found a profound reason to be grateful for the riches Pooh brought them.

With an extraordinary cast list that includes Elizabeth II and Walt Disney, Somewhere, a Boy and a Bear moves from idyllic childhood games in the English countryside to New York in the 1930s and the love affairs, litigation, and heartrending family rifts that touched the life of one of Britain's most brilliant writers and his most famous creation.

The Pleasures and Problems of Pooh

The 3rd Biennial kidlit@hollins Children’s Literature Symposium

On Zoom

Friday-Sunday, July 10-12, 2026

Hollins University Graduate Programs in Children’s Literature

Chaired by Lisa Rowe Fraustino

This year’s hundredth anniversary of A. A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh, published in 1926, provides a springboard for reflection on the role of classic children’s literature. This online symposium seeks presentation proposals from authors, illustrators, librarians, publishers, educators, and scholars in any field.

Possible topics for exploration include:
  • Close readings of how the Pooh stories interpellate young readers into social structures. Who’s out, who’s in?
  • How does imaginative play socialize children into adult behaviors?
  • How does adult nostalgia contribute to classic children’s literature?
  • What is the role of illustrations by E. H. Shepard and/or later artists?
  • What is the purpose of cuteness? What does it cover up? How does cuteness integrate with other aspects of storytelling and interpretation, and toward what effect?
  • Comparative readings of Pooh with other classics or with contemporary pairings
  • Commercialization and/or Disnification of Pooh and other classic texts
  • Examinations of media adaptations or translations into other languages. What is kept? What is reinterpreted? How do those choices reflect ideology?
  • Exploration of imaginative play and/or toys in children’s literature
  • Theoretical approaches–colonialism, whiteness, psychoanalytical, animal studies/anthropomorphism, food, boyhood, etc.
  • What is the purpose of literary criticism, especially books that are written primarily for children (not adults) to read?
  • What do we do when books feel like they aren’t written for us (because of race, class, gender, and other aspects of identity)?
  • How do our readings/experiences of a text change when we read it multiple times?
  • How does the intergenerational evolution of our engagement with classics call attention to new issues and questions over time?

We welcome proposals of 500 words and artwork of (no larger than 1000 pixels wide or no larger than 5mb).
